College admission season is starting, and events like the recent Operations Varsity Blues scandal are exposing the rising value of labels in academia. Carrie Krawiec, LMFT from the Birmingham Maple Clinic, was recently quoted by the Oakland Press to discuss this phenomenon, and the importance of letting their children’s wishes and comfort take the front seat as opposed to parental sentimentality and desire. Regarding the pressure to attend prestigious colleges, Carrie notes that
“This could be driven by a parent’s sentimental experience of their own school, their own regret about what they didn’t or couldn’t do and a desire for their children to do it, or a fantasy that things would be better if this magic ‘what if’ could have really happened,”
